Event description

We’d love for you to join us at our Brain Matters Hokitika event!

Throughout the year we’re taking our researchers on the road to bring awareness to the many different areas and conditions of the brain, and how research is currently being conducted on understanding the brain better

ABOUT THE SPEAKER & TOPIC

Dr Indranil Basak -

Indranil Basak is a research fellow at the University of Otago in Dunedin. He works with Associate Professor Stephanie Hughes in the department of Biochemistry. Before moving to Dunedin, Indranil earned his undergraduate from India followed by postgraduate degrees from the UK and the US.

Indranil’s current research in the Hughes group is focused on finding treatments for incurable brain diseases, including childhood and adult diseases. He is working with some unique cells that can be turned into different types of brain cells. Using these cells, Indranil is trying to understand the biology of the waste recycling units of the brain cells, a.k.a. the lysosomes. Mutations in certain genes that encode proteins in the lysosomes lead to several brain diseases. With grant funding from the Neurological Foundation of New Zealand, Indranil is investigating how these mutations lead to such severe diseases and if our unique cell system can be used to find a cure.
