ABOUT

Featuring NEW WAVES artists, this panel conversation explores how artists with varying levels of hearing ability integrate their unique auditory experiences into their creative work. Through both a creative and clinical lens, we will delve into the profound way that hearing, or its absence, shapes artistic expression and the creative process. This panel will be Auslan-interpreted. 

This panel is part of NEW WAVES, a trans-disciplinary event and exhibition exploring the experiences of the d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing community through art. Featuring various visual mediums, film and music, the project seeks to draw connections between creativity and accessibility.

MODERATOR

Rae Choi is a Chinese-Australian filmmaker with a background in law and community arts. Her directorial debut short ‘When The Sky Was Blue’ was nominated for an Australian Writers’ Guild Award and is available on SBS on Demand. In 2020 she learned she is hard-of-hearing. ‘Some Kind of Blue’ is based on this discovery.

PANELLISTS

Katrina Garvey is a profoundly prelingually d/Deaf artist based in Meanjin/Brisbane. Her practice spans photography, video, and installation, exploring themes of deafness, sexuality, gender, and language. Katrina holds a Bachelor of Photography (majoring in Photojournalism and Documentary Practices) from the Queensland College of Art. NEW WAVES features Katrina’s video works ‘Distantism’ and ‘Struggle’ and photography series ‘Listen’ and ‘Two Worlds’. 

Brodie McAllister is an improviser, trombonist, composer, teacher, and label-runner from Meanjin/Brisbane. His artistic practice focuses on improvisation, hyper-extended instrumental techniques, and performer-composer collaboration. He composed music for the short film ‘When the Sky Was Blue’ and is the creative director of the independent label Made Now Music. 

Penelope Woods is an adult rehabilitation audiologist and clinic owner of A Better Ear, specialising in patient-centred care. With a Masters of Audiological Studies from UQ and a Bachelor of Music from Griffith, her interests include the psycho-social impacts of hearing loss and evidence-based methods, focusing on ethical, long-term audiological care.

VENUE

KEPK is a multi level creative space which comprises an art gallery, imaging studio, artist studios, and event space. KEPK's focus is to provide a temporal housing for experimental creative projects, with a collective intention to enable other creative practitioners. The venue is wheelchair accessible. Car parking and public transport is readily available nearby.

Drinks from Green Beacon and Unico Zelo will be available by donation at the event.
