New Year's Blues - Dance Workshops with Grey Armstrong
Description
New Year’s Blues with Grey Armstrong
A special workshop series to deepen your dance, your history, and your musical ear
Step into the new year grounded, inspired, and transformed. This New Year’s Blues workshop series invites dancers of all levels to learn, grow, and reconnect with the heart of Blues alongside internationally respected instructor Grey Armstrong. Across three progressive classes, Grey will guide you into a deeper understanding of how Blues works—musically, culturally, and stylistically—so you can dance not just to the music, but with it.
Whether you've been dancing Blues for years or are stepping into the form for the first time, this series will give you the tools to move with confidence, honor the tradition, and expand your creative possibilities.
Workshop Lineup
1. Anatomy of Blues
Blues isn’t just “freestyling”—so what actually makes a dance Blues? In this foundational session, Grey breaks down the core building blocks of Blues dances and their relationship to the music. Learn what makes a dance feel right, how to identify authentic movement choices, and how to dance Blues without relying on ideas borrowed from other styles. Walk away feeling grounded, informed, and ready to express yourself through the dance form itself.
2. What Does It Mean to Be a Part of the Blues Tradition
Today, Blues—both in dance and music—lives and breathes worldwide. Conversations about authenticity, ownership, and representation often surface, but rarely do dancers have shared context for what these ideas actually mean. In this class, explore the roots of Blues, reflect on your place within the tradition, and sharpen your musical ear. Together, we’ll uncover what may have been missing from our understanding—and how we can honor the legacy through the way we show up to the dance.
3. Expand Your Blues
Have you heard Japanese Blues? African Blues? Blues-inflected tracks by artists who don’t consider themselves Blues musicians at all? Why do Blues from white artists often feel different—and why do some still carry soul? This final session invites you to stretch your ear and movement vocabulary beyond the expected, exploring contemporary, international, and unexpected Blues sounds. Expand your Blues dancing in ways that are grounded in tradition yet open to evolution.
