New Zealand Infrastructure Resilience Index: Are we making the right choices?

NZIER, with Downer, has undertaken work on the Infrastructure Resilience Index, and what it tells us about the resilience and preparedness of New Zealand’s infrastructure.
The Index looks across key infrastructure sectors and regions to identify where resilience is relatively strong, where vulnerabilities remain, and how well the current investment pipeline is aligned with those vulnerabilities.
This is the starting point for a broader discussion about Auckland and New Zealand’s infrastructure choices — particularly the balance between building new infrastructure and maintaining what we already have, how we prioritise investment when resources are constrained, and what greater infrastructure preparedness could look like in practice.

Christina Leung is Deputy Chief Executive, Principal Economist and Head of Membership Services at the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER).
She has over 20 years’ experience analysing the New Zealand economy and is a regular commentator in the media on economic, infrastructure and business issues. Alongside her economics work, Christina is a frequent speaker and panelist at industry and public events, where she enjoys translating economic analysis into the practical choices facing businesses, communities and policymakers. She is also Vice Chair of CFA Society New Zealand and a CFA Charter holder.
