Newspaper Theatre: The People's Narratives
Event description
June 24 - Newspaper Theatre: The People's Narratives (Drop In)
Throughout history, the arts and artists have been essential in guiding us through difficult and dangerous times like these. Are you seeking creative strategies for navigating the current landscape? Do you want to connect with creative people in meaningful ways? Do you need an outlet for alllllll of the feeeeeelings? Do you want to bring embodied activities into your work? Or maybe you’re a theatre practitioner who wants to practice and build skills in a community environment?
Theatre for media literacy and narrative reclamation! Theatre of the Oppressed activities will guide our creative analysis and remix of the media of the moment. This workshop opens with a creative check in and Theatre of the Oppressed games. We will then dive into an examination of the media we are inundated with. We will identify dominant narratives and counter narratives; think critically about the messages we receive; and get creative about the stories we tell, exploring theatrical approaches including image work and improvisation to amplify the people’s narratives.
Sliding scale rates available at registration.

June 17-August 19 | Savoy Denver, CO
Join Rachael K Sharp in partnership with Theatre Artibus, and The Savoy Denver this summer exploring a range of Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) modalities, including games, image, newspaper and forum theatre, and Rainbow of Desire. All of these forms are rooted in the practice of dialogue, storytelling and improvisation. Rachael’s approach also incorporates Somatic Abolition and applied theatre modalities, staying responsive to the people, place, and power dynamics at play. As TO founder Augusto Boal said,
“Theatre is a form of knowledge; it should and can also be a means of transforming society. Theatre can help us build our future...”
This season will include 2 drop in workshops followed by a six week series culminating in a creative community activation!
No previous experience necessary.
Stay tuned for updates! With enough participants we will be able to invite guest artists for a few sessions as well!
