The Power of a Well-Written Position Description & Effective Onboarding

Presented by Dianne Newell - The People & Culture Link

A clear and engaging Position Description (PD) is essential for attracting and retaining volunteers. Volunteers want to understand their role, responsibilities, and the impact they’ll make from day one. Without a well-defined PD, they may feel uncertain, overwhelmed, or disconnected—leading to disengagement or early drop-off.

This training will guide you through writing compelling, flexible PDs that not only outline key tasks but also inspire volunteers by aligning with their skills, passions, and motivations. A well-crafted PD can turn a simple role into an exciting opportunity for personal and professional growth while ensuring volunteers feel valued and purposeful.

Beyond the PD, a structured onboarding process is crucial for long-term engagement. Volunteers who feel welcomed, supported, and well-prepared are far more likely to stay committed. We’ll cover best practices for onboarding, including clear communication, mentoring, and fostering a sense of belonging from day one.

By the end of this session, you’ll have the tools to create engaging and adaptable PDs and an onboarding strategy that sets volunteers up for success—ensuring they feel confident, inspired, and ready to contribute meaningfully to your mission.

We can also learn from one another and utilise current systems that are working.
