Sonic Excavations : Undergound/ Underwater

Ros captures unusual man made and natural environments using lowered 360 surround dummyhead site recordings and underwater hyrodrophone recording probes. She invites us to come with her under the earth and underwater, creating new sonic excavations every instant using Tarhu spike fiddle and historical Renaissance Bass and Tenor recorders, images and film.

Dr Ros Bandt is an internationally acclaimed sound artist, composer, musician, researcher and scholar. Since 1977 she has pioneered interactive sound installations, sound sculptures, and created sound playgrounds, aeolian harps spatial music systems, and some 40 sound installations worldwide. She has curated many sound performances, exhibitions and events. Her original works are recorded on New Albion Records (USA), Move Records (Melbourne), EMI/ABC, Wergo (Germany), Ars Acoustica, Double Moon (Turkey), Pozitif Müzik Yapim, Hearing Places, Sonic Gallery and Bedroom Suck Records.

Joe Talia

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Joe Talia is an improviser and composer who works with percussion, tape and electronics. Focussing on the use of Revox tape machine and analogue synthesizers in combination with instruments and field recordings, Talia’s electronic works patiently build up sparkling, detail-rich sound worlds of gliding tones, skittering percussion and burbling location atmospherics. In live situations, Talia often uses tape and effects to process and warp his own and others’ playing into uncanny chains of echoes and spectral smears of sound.

A virtuoso drummer, as a percussionist Talia emerges from the traditions of jazz and free improvisation and has developed a unique personal language of shifting accents, subtle virtuosity and discreet extended technique that he welds equally ably in jazz, rock, new music and improvisational contexts. Like his electronic works, his drumming often demonstrates a keen attention to long-form structures, dynamic development and group interactions.

James Rushford

James Rushford is an Australian composer-performer, whose work draws from concrète, improvised, avant-garde and collagist musical languages, staking out an idiosyncratic stylistic space that has been described as ‘electro-acoustic experimentation with a beating heart’ (Boomkat) and ‘haunted Jacobean ASMR’ (The Wire). Investigating the creases, cracks, and folds in traditions ranging from early music to new age, Rushford’s work subtly exaggerates seemingly liminal aspects such as atmosphere and the bodily presence of the performer until these take on a weight equal to musical elements such as pitch, rhythm and timbre.

Alexandra Spence

Alexandra Spence is a sound artist and musician living on unceded Wangal land in Sydney, Australia. Through her practice Alex attempts to reimagine the intricate relationships between the listener, the object, and the surrounding environment as a kind of communion or conversation. Her aesthetic favours field recordings, analogue technologies and object interventions.

She has released her music with Room40, Longform editions, Mappa, Canti Magnetici (solo), More Mars & Infant Tree (as Banana), receiving Bandcamp recommendations and reviews in the likes of The Quietus and The Wire Magazine: "Her sense of field is broader. It's as if she is trying to capture a whole landscape of sound entire... We ought to spend more time with Alexandra Spence, with our ears simply & honestly open.”
(She holds the belief that electricity might actually be magic)

ACCESSIBILITY Eastmint is accessible via wheelchair through the non main entrance, there is a small sliding door frame that we can place a ramp over the top of. Please get in touch if you require this option. We regret we are unable to provide accessible toilet facilities at this time, although there is wheelchair access to the hand washing sink which is a private space. Closest accessible toilets located at the Peacock Hotel 150m away. There are no windows that are openable in the space but we will open the double doors between sets for airflow. The space is quite cavernous with high ceilings and is an un-renovated warehouse so not tightly sealed. We do not have our own HEPA filter but try to source one for gigs when we can. Please contact eastmintrecords@gmail.com if you require any other info
