No Other Land
Winner of the 2025 Academy Award for best documentary feature, No Other Land is one of the most acclaimed and important documentaries of our time.
The film documents the destruction of a cluster of Palestinian villages and the theft of land in Masafer Yatta, a region in the West Bank. It was created by a Palestinian-Israeli collective of four activists: Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham, and Rachel Szor.
As a stark reminder of the daily violence faced by Palestinians, including for truth-telling, on return from the Academy Awards, co-director Hamdan Ballal was violently attacked by a group of Israeli settlers and soldiers. Despite being significantly injured, he was denied medical care, arrested under false pretenses and held overnight and beaten in an Israeli military prison. Hamdan’s treatment highlights the vital importance of bearing witness to stories like the one in this film.
Directors’ statement (read the full statement here):
‘We’re making this film together, as a Palestinian-Israeli collective, because we desperately want to stop the Israeli-led ongoing ethnic cleansing of the community of Masafer Yatta, and because we want to resist the reality of Apartheid we were born into – from opposite, unequal, sides. Life in our land is becoming scarier, more violent, more oppressive, every day – and we feel helpless, fighting against very powerful systems of control. We can only shout out something radically different to the world – this film – which at its core, is not only proof of Israeli settler-colonial war crimes taking place in the present, but also a proposal for the future, a search for a path towards justice and equality and an end to Apartheid.’
Funds raised will be shared between:
- a fundraiser set up to provide emergency funding for costs incurred by settler-state violence in Masafer Yatta:Â https://savemasaferyatta.com/support-masafer-yatta/Â
- Families in Gaza, through Newcastle Mums for Palestine
