Noah Riseman: Explorations in NSW Trans History, 1945-2023
Event description
Saturday, 24 February 2024
Trans people have been in Australia since time immemorial, though it is only since the end of the Second World War that there has been a clear discourse and visibility around transness. New South Wales has been the site of much of Australia’s trans visibility, including the first known trans organisation, the oldest service provider, and some of the more heated debates around trans rights. This presentation draws on research in the new book Transgender Australia: A History since 1910, focusing on NSW in the post-Second World War era.
Noah Riseman is a Melbourne-based historian who specialises in Australian histories of sexuality, gender and race, and was Professor of History at the Australian Catholic University for 16 years. He is author or co-author of several books, including Serving in Silence? Australian LGBT servicemen and women (2018), Pride in Defence: The Australian Military and LGBTI Service since 1945 (2020) and the newly released Transgender Australia: A History since 1910. He has also written publicly accessible reports on Australian trans history, most recently A History of Trans Health Care in Australia (AusPATH, 2022) and New South Wales Trans History (The Gender Centre and ACON, 2022).
