NOCHES FLAMENCAS in East Los Angeles
Featuring Compañia Chicanas Gitanas

Co-Directed by Tiana Alvarez & Briseyda Zarate 

June 24th and 25th at 7:30 pm

Chicanas Gitanas & Company ignite the stage with a masterful rendition of authentic Flamenco in its most exciting manifestation - The Tablao. Pushing the limits of self-expression and moving away from choreographed steps and towards exciting improvisation, these masterful artists will take you on an intimate and exhilarating journey deep into the heart and soul of Flamenco!


DIRECTOR BIO:

TIANA ÁLVAREZ

Tiana Alvarez is a multifaceted artist, dancer and choreographer who began dancing at family parties since she could walk. At the age of four Tiana began her dance studies in Los Angeles where she had early training in ballet, jazz, hip hop and other world dance forms. Tiana attended UCLA where she received her B.A. in Dance with a minor in Chican@ Studies. She has performed and collaborated with Peter Sellars, El Teatro Campesino, Donald Byrd, Nuria Castejon, LA Philharmonic, LA Opera, the band Quetzal, and toured throughout Europe and the United States. She studied flamenco with La Meira, Nelida Tirado, Manuel Gutierrez, Carmen Ledesma, Carmela Greco, Soledad Barrio, and Omayra Amaya amongst other artists in NYC, LA, and Madrid. Tiana performed regularly in NYC and Los Angeles tablaos, including El Cid and Café Sevilla. She has been a teaching artist for Center Theater Group, Music Center, Flamenco Vivo (NYC) and LA MusArt. Awards and scholarships include Jacob’s Pillow in 2008 and 2011 and a semi-finalist in the Music Center’s Spotlight Awards. Recent dance credits include the Starz show “Vida” (season 2), “The Barber of Seville” “Carmen”, and Cristina Hoyos’ choreography in“El Gato Montes” with the LA Opera. She is a proud resident of East Los Angeles.
