ImpactED’s Comprehensive Literacy Framework

Peer-reviewed by Dr Alison Arrow

Day 1: The Science of Learning | Assessment Foundations

Effective literacy instruction is grounded in how the brain learns. This session explores the cognitive science behind memory, attention, and learning transfer, establishing a research-based framework for literacy development. Participants will examine the role of explicit instruction, structured practice, and scaffolding in supporting literacy acquisition.

In the afternoon, we turn to baseline assessment—what data we gather, why it matters, and how it informs teaching. We will explore evidence-based assessment tools that provide insights into students’ current literacy skills, helping educators identify strengths, gaps, and next steps.

Day 2: Decoding | Spelling & Transcription

The morning session focuses on decoding and applying research-backed strategies to support phonemic awareness, phonics, and word recognition.

The afternoon shifts to spelling and transcription, reinforcing the encoding process through morphology, orthographic mapping, and handwriting fluency. We will engage with the Composition Teaching Sequence from the New Zealand Curriculum (NZC), ensuring students develop skills in planning, drafting, revising, and editing written work.

Day 3: Reading Fluency | Comprehension

Fluency is the bridge between word recognition and comprehension. The morning session delves into fluency development, covering automaticity, prosody, and repeated reading strategies.

In the afternoon, the focus shifts to comprehension and critical analysis, equipping learners with strategies to engage deeply with diverse texts. We will explore explicit teaching of comprehension strategies, including inference, summarisation, and critical analysis. ]

All required resources for this workshop will be provided, or are available, to participants at no additional cost.
