    Event description

The Northern Cemetery contains the most spectacular memorial in the city

    - that of the owner of "Larnach's Castle" - whose skull with the holes of a fatal bullet was absent from the grave for a few years.

It also contains the remains of the author of New Zealand's National Anthem, the builder of a clock which has run without winding since the 1860s, three men hanged in the Dunedin jail yard (one whose skull is still missing) and moved there when the jail was demolished, New Zealand's first female doctor, and a little boy who drowned at the wharves, aged five, in 1909.

    • Meet Gregor by the Sexton's cottage, just inside the cemetery gates
    • Plenty of parking available right at the entrance
    • The Northern is the most comfortable walking of the cemeteries but wear comfortable shoes, dress for the weather and be sure to bring drinking water.
    • 90 minutes long
    • Tickets are self refundable up to one day before the event.  Booking fee not refunded.  If you can't attend because you're unwell after refunds have closed, email darkestdunedin@gmail.com for a credit.
