Northern Refugee Welcome Group Movie Night: Do the Right Thing
Event description
Northern Refugee Welcome Group is a newly formed community group to support the arrival of a refugee household to Australia.
Community groups can sign up to the Australian Government's Community Refugee Integration and Settlement Pilot and raise money to sponsor a refugee household to be resettled in Australia. Our group is aiming to do just that, and this is our second film night fundraiser.
Please join us for a film screening of 'Do the Right Thing,' a classic 1989 comedy-drama written and directed by Spike Lee. Set in Brooklyn, the film explores simmering racial tensions between its African-American residents and the Italian-American owners of a local pizzeria.
In 2022, the film was ranked the 24th greatest of all time in Sight and Sound magazine's decennial poll of international critics, programmers, curators, archivists and academics. It has since been featured on many other lists of the greatest films of all time by numerous critics. New York Times film critic Wesley Morris has called Do the Right Thing his favourite film.
Your ticket to the movie includes a small donation to the cause. We need to raise $25,000 to sponsor a household, so additional donations are very welcome. If you wish to make a further tax-deductible donation, you can visit our donation page here.
Pizzas, snacks and drinks will be available on the night. Pizzas can be pre-ordered, so they will be ready for you when you arrive. Just follow this link to the Henkel Street website and include the film title and date on your order.
If the event is sold out, don't panic! We will be having another fundraising film night soon, so put your name and contact details on the wait list and we'll be in touch.
This event will be taking place on the stolen lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation. This land always was and always will be Aboriginal land.
