Northern Refugee Welcome Group Movie Night: The Seed of the Sacred Fig
Event description
Northern Refugee Welcome Group is a community group from the northern suburbs of Melbourne who are raising funds to help support a refugee household to settle in Australia.
We were matched with a refugee family who arrived in Melbourne in mid December 2024. Originally from Syria, the family is comprised of two parents and four children. The two primary school-aged children have started school, the four year old has started kinder, and the 18 month old is keeping her parents busy between their English language classes! They have already planted a veggie garden and will soon become the owners of a donated small car.
Our fundraising will support the family with a range of costs as they establish themselves in our community.
This is part of the CRISP initiative (Community Refugee Integration and Settlement Pilot) through which local communities can welcome and support new refugee families.
Please join us for a film screening of The Seed of the Sacred Fig, an award-winning 2024 political drama directed, written and co-produced by celebrated Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulod (There Is No Evil). The film, which was shot entirely in secret, depicts a father’s promotion to investigating judge; and the shifting dynamics with his wife and daughters following public protests against compulsory hijab.
Choose your donation (the amount includes the ticket price): $20, $30 or $40
