NOTATION October Book Club

NOTATION is a Gold Coast media brand that spends its days pulling apart the cultural, psychological and societal forces shaping brands, people and places. Naturally, our office spends a lot of its time reading. Passing books between desks, arguing about endings, working out what a story reveals about the world we live in. 

We're bringing our bookish office chats off the page and into our community. NOTATION Book Club runs monthly at Bar Evelyn – a standing invitation to sit down with people who read the way we do.

This month, we’re reading Fruit Fly by Josh Silver, a book that has been described as car-crash literature you can’t look away from. Seven years after becoming a literary sensation, Mallory is desperate to revive her career after years of writer’s block. Then she meets Leo, a young struggling addict surviving on the streets and trading sex for survival. He’s vulnerable. He’s enigmatic. And to Mallory, he’s the perfect story. Fruit Fly gets deliciously dark as Mallory becomes increasingly determined to turn Leo’s life into her next bestseller, forcing the question: whose story is it to tell, and how far would you go for the perfect one?

Bar Evelyn is taking care of provisions, with a run of their best seasonal share plates for the table, paired with a wine selection from Whip Wines, who've generously donated a few bottles for the night. $60 gets you dinner and a glass of wine (non-alcoholic option available) – plus a night of good conversation, new people, and good food.
