Join us at the Dufferin Learning Centre in Nanaimo, BC for an engaging, practical workshop exploring how we can make the rich learning happening through play more visible.

We know that play can be a powerful vehicle for learning. But when children are deeply engaged in building, creating, imagining, investigating and collaborating, how do we notice the learning that is taking place? How do we connect what we observe to curriculum and competencies? And how can we respond in ways that deepen learning without taking ownership of the play away from children?

In this interactive workshop, Lisa Pedersen-Skene of Longworth Education will invite educators to explore these questions through the framework of Notice, Recognize, Respond.

This won't be a day of sitting and listening. Participants will experience play themselves, examine the learning that emerges from different play invitations, and make connections to core and curricular competencies. Together, we'll explore the role of the teacher across the play continuum and consider what intentional, responsive teaching can look like in a play-based classroom.

We'll then turn our attention to documentation: how can we capture what we have noticed and recognized and communicate the depth of children's learning to families, colleagues and the children themselves?

You will leave with practical approaches you can take back into your classroom, alongside new ways of thinking about the relationship between play, curriculum, observation, documentation and responsive teaching.

This workshop is designed to be participatory, reflective and grounded in the realities of classroom practice. Come ready to talk, think, play and connect with other educators from across the Nanaimo area and Vancouver Island.
