Event description

Pictured: Exhibition view of Making in Between: Indigenous Americans. Work by Mercedes Dorame.

Join us for a tour of AMOCA’s exhibition Making in Between: Indigenous Americans with Exhibitions Manager Pam Aliaga. As time allows, we may also tour In Their Hands: The Evolution of Mata Ortiz Pottery.

Go behind the scenes and learn about the traditions, influences, and inspirations that contributed to this exciting exhibition.

Making in Between exhibits works by Mercedes Dorame, Anita Fields, Courtney M. Leonard, and Cannupa Hanska Luger, artists who embrace their heritage and explore boundary-pushing themes of identity, culture, history, and community; the exhibition introduces a breadth of unique narratives from these trailblazing artists and complicates viewers’ expectations of what constitutes contemporary Indigenous art.

Making in Between is on view in Gallery B through November 30, 2025.

In the Vault Gallery through November 23, In Their Hands traces the remarkable development of Mata Ortiz pottery—a living tradition born from both necessity and artistry. The exhibition explores how a small village in northern Mexico transformed archaeological fragments into a thriving ceramic movement that bridges ancient Mogollon techniques with contemporary forms and designs.
