Nowra Wastewater Treatment Plant Open Day
Event description
Shoalhaven Water’s new Nowra Wastewater Treatment Plant (WwTP) is having an open day on Saturday 21st October for National Water Week, and you are invited to a guided tour providing you with an insight into how your wastewater is collected, treated and delivered back to the environment. We will explore why wastewater treatment is essential for maintaining a healthy environment and discuss how Shoalhaven Water are adopting environmentally responsible practices to support a circular economy in the Shoalhaven.
Nowra treatment plant was first commissioned in 1937, the Shoalhaven's first treatment plant. A major upgrade of the treatment plant was completed in late 2019. The upgrade uses innovative wastewater treatment technology (including filtration and two-stage disinfection) to meet current environmental and water recycling guidelines. The plant treatment capacity was increased to the equivalent of 37,500 persons and is linked via distribution pipelines to the Reclaimed Water Management Scheme (REMS) ensuring that up to 90% of the output can be beneficially reused. Since its inception, REMS has facilitated the recycling of over 28,000 mega litres of reclaimed water for use on local dairy farms and sporting facilities throughout the Shoalhaven.
This open day aims to provide the public an understanding of the wastewater treatment process and develop awareness on how we all have a role to play to conserve water resources, reduce waste and safeguard our environment and public health. Our Water Saving Hero’s Tapstar & Dripette will be attending to captivate the school age children’s attention.
All registered community attendees who sign-in and attend on the day will go into the draw to win 1 x Holiday Haven gift voucher worth $250 to contribute to your next visit to any Holiday Haven Park. The winner will be drawn on Wednesday 25th October and notified by telephone and email. Winner will be published on our website and Shoalhaven City Council's Facebook. *Shoalhaven City Council & Shoalhaven Water employees are not eligible to enter this competition.
If you would like to witness firsthand the journey of wastewater from collection to treatment and reuse and go into the draw to win a $250 Holiday Haven gift voucher, tickets are free, but bookings are essential.
