NRW 2024: Mabo - A STEM College Film Screening and Yarning Session

    This event has passed Register

    Event description

To commemorate Mabo Day on 3 June, one of the significant milestones marking Reconciliation Week, RMIT STEM College will be screening the film, Mabo, which depicts the life of Eddie Mabo and his journey to campaign for land rights for his community (Mer) and how this led to a momentous time in Australian history - recognising native title rights for all Indigenous people in Australia and overturning legislation around terra nullius.

The film traces his life from a carefree young man, his relationship to his one true love, up to his death and the handing down of the High Court decision on that historic day - 3rd June 1992. Mabo is as much a love story as a document of one man's fight for recognition of what he believed was legally his.

The film screening will conclude with a short yarning session to reflect on Reconciliation Week and its impact on the lives of Indigenous communities and a light lunch.

    11.30am - Drinks and nibbles

    11.45am - Film screening commences

1.30pm - Yarning session and light lunch

    2.00pm - Event concludes

So come join and mark Reconciliation Week with us.
