This event has passed Get tickets

Event description

Join us for a practical "hands-on" Mathematics workshop with the states leading Mathematics specialist, author and highly sought after speaker.

In this session Paul Swan and Narelle Rice will examine the differences between Kindergarten and Pre-primary mathematics in terms of number. A clearly laid out sequence of tasks and games will be shared to illustrate key features of the sequence. The games for the most part will use dice, counters and 2 cm cubes. A new manipulative called 'Bondblocks' will be used in part of the session to show how to move students from simply counting in ones to understanding ideas such as 'larger number' and 'missing number' as included in on entry testing.

Dr Paul Swan is an honorary fellow of the Australian College of Educational Leadership, a life member of the Mathematical Association, award-winning author, highly sought-after speaker and designer of games, programs and materials to support teachers to teach mathematics in an interesting way. He has taught in primary, secondary and tertiary settings and is now a consultant to local, national and international schools. He is a designer of mathematics manipulative materials and support materials for the top manufacturers in the world.

Narelle Rice has been teaching in Perth, Western Australia since she graduated from Edith Cowan University (ECU) in 1997 with first class honours. She began as a generalist primary teacher and after 5 years, switched to become a specialist teacher in mathematics. She has been blessed to teach students from the very early years through to Year 9 in the secondary school, students who really struggle through to those who are mathematically gifted. Narelle has a passion for teaching students who don’t fit the middle, supporting teachers and developing whole school systems. During this time she has also worked in teacher education providing professional learning for the Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia and pre-service teacher education at ECU.
