    Event description

Join us for a practical "hands-on" Mathematics workshop with the states leading Mathematics specialist, author and highly sought after speaker.

There are many tools in literacy to support students struggling in literacy, but very few in mathematics. Paul Swan and Narelle Rice, will share some tell-tale signs that students will struggle in mathematics or are already struggling in maths. Clearly prevention is better than cure, so practical advice will be given for nipping misconceptions in the bud and then some further ideas for intervening in addition and subtraction will be provided. Note this session will include some material that is freely available to download from bondblocks.com, so feel free to explore this website before attending. Many of the desk visuals and support materials will prove invaluable.

Dr Paul Swan is an honorary fellow of the Australian College of Educational Leadership, a life member of the Mathematical Association, award-winning author, highly sought-after speaker and designer of games, programs and materials to support teachers to teach mathematics in an interesting way. He has taught in primary, secondary and tertiary settings and is now a consultant to local, national and international schools. He is a designer of mathematics manipulative materials and support materials for the top manufacturers in the world.

Narelle Rice has been teaching in Perth, Western Australia since she graduated from Edith Cowan University (ECU) in 1997 with first class honours. She began as a generalist primary teacher and after 5 years, switched to become a specialist teacher in mathematics. She has been blessed to teach students from the very early years through to Year 9 in the secondary school, students who really struggle through to those who are mathematically gifted. Narelle has a passion for teaching students who don’t fit the middle, supporting teachers and developing whole school systems. During this time she has also worked in teacher education providing professional learning for the Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia and pre-service teacher education at ECU.

AITSL aligned certification will be provided for all participants on completion.
