    Event description

Nau mai e ngā wāhine toa!

After sold out women's events in 2019 and 2020, NUKU Live is back at Elemental AKL with a brand new format, bringing you the ‘Atua Series’ for 2021. Celebrating our Atua Wāhine (female Māori gods), we have three events over three days to share Indigenous knowledge and practice, specifically for wāhine.

Hine-Te-Iwaiwa is the atua of childbirth, weaving and the cycles of the moon, and is the inspiration behind event two.

We have two parts to this exciting day.

In the Māngere Arts Centre theatre we host one of our renowned NUKU Live speaker events, bringing the kaupapa of NUKU directly to you to share Indigenous knowledge, practice and values.

Veteran broadcaster, television host and reo Māori champion Stacey Morrison talks to us about language reclamation and language planning to help bring our Indigenous languages back into our homes, workplaces and communities.

Founders of Tuhi Stationary Geneva Harrison and Mihi Tibble share with us their stories of Hina (personification of moon) as they teach us about Maramakata and how we can use the Māori lunar calendar system in our everyday lives.

Stayed tuned for more speakers to be announced by the end of June.

We will also have a special appearance by Jordyn with a Why who will perform her single, Te Ao Marama

In the foyer of the Māngere Arts Centre Theatre we host the NUKU Mākete - a market celebrating Indigenous women-owned small businesses. Makers and creators of clothing, crafts, art, jewellery, stationary and more. The Mākete is free and open to the public throughout the day.

Speaker event 10am - 12.30pm (inside the theatre) - ticketed event (purchase here)
Mākete 10am - 2pm (in the theatre foyer) - free and open to public (no tickets required)

In acknowledgement of the importance of holding space we ask that the first day of tickets sales (Monday 14th June) be left for Indigenous women and available to everyone from Tuesday 15th June.

NUKU events are open to all women, including those who identify as wahine, trans or non-binary. Please note, due to the non-profit kaupapa that underpins all of our events, there are no refunds.
