Why number talks?

Number talks are 5-15 minute, carefully crafted classroom conversations on solving computation problems using mental strategies.

Run regularly over time, number talks build habits of reasoning which support conceptual understanding and confidence when working with numbers.

Number talks provide a collaborative learning space in which students use and develop their mathematical language skills to explain, explore and extend their understanding of key number concepts.

It's is a pedagogical approach that can be used with all ages. (Here is a video of a number talk in a Prep classroom).

Number talks provide a window into student thinking and many teachers are calling number talks the best part of their day.

Together in this workshop, we will:

Discuss what number talks are and how they can transform the maths learning experience
Explore key pedagogies including language, active listening, questioning, scribing and navigating mistakes
Know the difference between a 'number talk' and a 'number talk string'
Answer questions arising from your context

The ideas are appropriate for primary educators who want to:

support student conceptual understanding in number,
help build positive maths perceptions and bust damaging myths about maths, and
foster mathematical proficiency.
