Nutritional Psychiatry – Food & Mood Masterclass, Edinburgh
Description
Join us for a full-day workshop on the essentials of Lifestyle & Nutritional Psychiatry, a collaborative event featuring world-leading researchers and clinicians from the Food & Mood Centre at Deakin University, the British Society for Lifestyle Medicine, and a panel of invited experts.
Following the success of last year’s event held at the RCP in London, we’re excited to bring this event to Edinburgh. This will be a 1-day collaborative in-person event which will include setting goals to be followed up by a practical online review session and reading materials to ensure successful application of the learning.
This event will highlight the critical role of lifestyle – particularly diet – in mental and brain health. It will provide practical tools and evidence-based insights to help healthcare professionals supporting patients around their mental health, to integrate diet- and lifestyle-based strategies into their treatment plans.
The Deakin University Food and Mood Centre:
The centre is focused on expanding the important research in the new field of Nutritional Psychiatry to discover risk factors and develop solutions to mental health problems using dietary and nutritional strategies.
This is the only such research centre in the world and this unique event will give a select number of attendees a one off intense and concentrated educational experience led by Professor Felice Jacka & other global experts in the rapidly evolving field of nutritional psychiatry. (new line – sorry won’t let me enter) Professor Jacka has been responsible for the development of the highly innovative and impactful field of ‘Nutritional Psychiatry’, establishing diet as a risk factor and treatment target for mental disorders.
The results of the studies she has led including the landmark SMILES trial) have been highly influential, being cited in more than 100 policy documents globally (e.g., WHO, UNICEF) and influencing clinical guidelines in psychiatry in Australia and elsewhere.
She is widely recognized as international leader in the field of Nutritional Psychiatry research and is an ISI Highly Cited Researcher (2020-2024 inclusive), putting her in the top 0.1% of publishing scientists worldwide for impact. In 2021 she was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her services to Nutritional Psychiatry. She has written two books for commercial publication, including the very popular children’s book “There’s a Zoo in my Poo”.

She led on developing Scottish Government's policy approach to support adults with multi-morbidity. At the end of 2014 Frances returned to the role of Medical Director in NHS Fife and retired from that role in 2019. Short spells of cover for the Director of Research & Development and his deputy followed. From April 2020 to May 2022 Frances was a member of the Independent Review Panel for NHS Highland set up to oversee the implementation of their Healing Process for the numerous staff members who were affected by harassment and bullying in the organisation.
