NUTS Presents: Mr Burns, a post-electric play
Event description
Written by Anne Washburn, featuring music by Michael Friedman
Civilisation has fallen after an apocalyptic disaster, leaving the world without electricity. Amidst the ruins of a broken America, a group of survivors huddle together and attempt to recall an episode of The Simpsons while trying to forget the world they’re in. Seven years later, a theatre trope travels the country using relics of their old world - old Simpsons episodes, commercial jingles and contemporary pop songs - to entertain a society slowly starting to rebuild. Seventy five years later, a new generation stages an epic piece of musical mythology, starring some curiously familiar characters - but not as we once knew them.
An ambitious, dark and funny epic spanning decades, Mr Burns explores how far pop culture can be pushed - even when culture seems extinct - and humanity’s ever evolving relationship with storytelling using The Simpsons, Martin Scorcese, Diet Coke and a little bit of Lady Gaga.
