This online meeting will include an overview of the preparations for the UN Summit of the Future and discussion on what should be New Zealand’s priorities to advance the summit. The outcomes will be provided to our representative at the Summit.

Background

The United Nations will hold a Summit for the Future, September 22-23, 2024, in order to advance 'Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow.’ UN Member States are already preparing a Declaration for Future Generations to be adopted prior to the Summit and a Pact for the Future to be adopted at the Summit.

Nanaia Mahuta

As a mother, and a former constituent MP with 20 plus years’ experience who has come from ‘flax-root’ politics, Hon Nanaia Mahuta remains connected to the aspirations of people from all walks of life.

During her time in Parliament, Nanaia supported policies and initiatives that built the capacity of communities, especially social service organisations, greater investment in education, employment and training opportunities particularly for young people, supported the continuation of the Treaty settlement process and supported specific initiatives that lift the wellbeing and opportunities for young mums and those who are vulnerable and victims of abuse.

Nanaia is a tribal member of Waikato-Tainui, Ngāti Maniapoto and Ngāti Manu and her parliamentary experience has enabled her to contribute to the collective aspirations of Māori and all New Zealanders.

In the 2020 Labour Government, Nanaia became the first woman to hold the Foreign Affairs portfolio. Her other roles in the previous Government also included being Minister of Local Government, and Associate Minister for Māori Development.

Nudhara Yusuf

Nudhara is the Youth Coordinator for Coalition for the UN We Need (C4UN) which is the open (and main) civil society international network engaging with the UN Summit facilitators (Ambassadors from the lead countries). Recently, Nudhara was selected by the UN as one of the co-chairs of the 2024 UN Civil Society Conference which takes place in May. The main focus of the 2024 conference is civil society engagement in the UN Summit of the Future.

Through extensive civil society consultations, C4UN prepared an Interim Peoples Pact for the Future which was released in April last year and which has served as a common advocacy tool for civil society. This is now being revised and updated in order to have the final Peoples Pact for the Future released at the UN Civil Society Conference.

Rebecca Shoot

Rebecca is Executive Director of Citizens for Global Solutions, Chair of the Washington Working Group on the International Criminal Court, Co-founder of Legal Alternatives to War – LAW not War, Senior Adviser for Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament and cofounder of Mobilizing an Earth Governance Alliance. She is an international lawyer and democracy and governance practitioner with more than 15 years of experience in the non-governmental, inter-governmental, and private sectors supporting human rights, democratic processes, and the rule of law on five continents. In nearly a decade with the National Democratic Institute (NDI), Rebecca held numerous positions in headquarters and the field supporting and leading democracy and governance programs in Central and Eastern Europe and Southern and East Africa. She subsequently moved to a leadership role steering NDI’s Governance projects globally and directing programming for the bipartisan House Democracy Partnership of the U.S. House of Representatives. Rebecca created a global parliamentary campaign for Democratic Renewal and Human Rights as Senior Advisor to Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA), an international network of legislators committed to collaboration to promote democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Prior to that, she directed PGA’s International Law and Human Rights Programme and ran PGA’s office in The Hague. Most recently, she helmed global programming to promote gender equality and criminal justice reform for the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI). Alyn Ware

Alyn Ware is a peace educator and international peace and disarmament campaigner. Originally from New Zealand he has lived in the United States and Switzerland, and now resides in the Czech Republic. Alyn is Co-founder and Global Coordinator of Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament, Peace and Disarmament Programs Director for the World Future Council, Director of the Basel Peace Office, International Representative for Aotearoa Lawyers for Peace and Program Director for the World Federalist Movement-Institute for Global Policy.

He co-founded a number of peace education initiatives in New Zealand including The Mobile Peace Van, Our Planet in Every Classroom, the Cool Schools Peer Mediation Program and UN Decade for a Culture of Peace Schools Outreach Program. And he has co-founded a number of international peace projects and networks including Abolition 2000, Move the Nuclear Weapons Money, UNFOLD ZERO, NoFirstUse Global, Legal Alternatives to War (LAW not War) and Mobilizing an Earth Governance Coalition.
