Join us this 18th to 20th October for a journey deep into the vibrant heart of Northern Ghana and Mali at our annual NZ Drum Dance Camp. Set amidst the serene landscapes of Waikato, this weekend is not just an event but a celebration of unity, rhythm, and the soul-stirring power of African drum and dance, curated for the NZ African drumming community.

This year, we spotlight the return of Bassidi Koné, a master drummer from Mali, known for his extraordinary prowess and captivating energy. Bassidi's artistry embodies the spirit and rhythm of West Africa, making his sessions a cornerstone of our camp. Joining him is a stellar lineup of instructors, including Nathan Bregmen, Yaw Asumadu, and NZ's own Jimi Dale, all committed to weaving a fabric of community through our shared love for African drum and dance.

Bassidi Koné’s Return: Bassidi Koné, a virtuoso of the djembe, brings a rare depth of knowledge and a vibrant energy that captures the essence of Malian music. His return to our camp is highly anticipated, offering participants an unparalleled opportunity to learn from a master whose life’s journey through music is a testament to the power of drumming to unite and inspire.

Yaw Asumadu:
A native of Ghana, has lived, breathed, and studied African Drumming and music his entire life. He has been a member of the Pan-African Orchestra for over 10 years and has performed globally in traditional and fusion groups, collaborating with legendary artists like Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Francis Fuster, Andy Summers, and Oren Marshall. After teaching classes in London for nearly 20 years, Yaw is now in New Zealand, offering an exciting opportunity to study with a master of his craft.

Jimi Dale:
A pioneer of African music in NZ, has been teaching African Drum and Dance classes in Auckland and around NZ since 1995. Recently, his passion has been exploring the relationship between melody and rhythm. He also enjoys being creative with singing, drums, dance, and stories. You may have seen Jimi performing as part of his band Tamani, a world music and dance group he formed, which has performed at many events all over NZ. Jimi loves the way African Drumming can bring people together, and how a simple groove and song can get people dancing.

Nathan Bregmen:
Having played drums for over 25 years and studied African drumming for over 10 years, Nathan Bregmen is known for delivering classes that are community-oriented, accessible, and enjoyable. African drumming, with its power to build community and bring people together through music in a short space of time, has become Nathan's instrument of choice. His light-hearted yet attentive teaching style has made him a favorite among many students across the country.

Special Event Announcement: This year, we’re transforming Saturday night with a “Special Guest Performance,” replacing the variety show to bring you an evening of exceptional entertainment and artistic expression, featuring talents that will surprise and delight all attendees.

Your ticket includes comfortable accommodation (BYO bedding essentials) for a fully immersive experience. With the exception of our communal African dinner, the camp is self-catered, featuring a large commercial kitchen.
