Nau mai haere mai Electra Business Breakfast is pleased to be welcoming back Sharon Zollner, the ANZ New Zealand Chief Economist. Sharon last spoke at Breakfast in September 2023, and it’s been an eventful year since then with a new Government, a bumpy ride for the economy, and choppy seas offshore.

It’s been a rough year for the New Zealand economy, with little relief for most on the interest rate front as the RBNZ keeps its foot on the inflation dragon’s throat. The good news is, they seem to be winning, and the end of the battle is in sight. Meanwhile, the new Government are getting their boots under the table as we weather the depths of winter and the slowdown in business activity across a wide range of sectors.

But spring is in the air. With cautious optimism that the worst might be over soon, what lies ahead for NZ Inc now we have navigated recession, Budget 2024, seen some tax relief, and inflation pressures are reducing? Sharon is an engaging commentator; she will make sense of the mass of economic indicators and suggest what we can perhaps expect from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand over the next 12 months so we can make better business decisions.

This breakfast will be held in the Southward Theatre as it is likely to draw a large crowd. Sharon will take questions on the day.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Sharon Zollner

ANZ New Zealand Chief Economist, media commentator, Mum, and karaoke mic hogger!

Sharon joined the ANZ Economics team in 2010 and became Chief Economist in late 2017. She started her career at the Reserve Bank of New Zealand in 1998 and has also worked at the Central Bank of Norway. Sharon created the NZ Truckometer economic indicator in 2012.

Her team of six includes financial markets, data and agriculture specialists as well as general macroeconomists. Her X feed speaks her work, and that of her team, who produce some of New Zealand’s most closely watched economic data as well as regular forecasts and commentary on the state of the economy. Sharon is based in Auckland and holds Kāpiti firmly in her annual speaking calendar with support from the ANZ Kāpiti team.
