OACAO International Contemporary Arts Exchange
〈The Space Between | 사이 (間)〉
At the point where boundaries dissolve and different trajectories intersect, The Space Between explores new possibilities in contemporary art.
Bringing together multidisciplinary artists from Korea and Australia, as well as Chile, Taiwan and beyond, this project moves beyond simply presenting completed works side by side. Instead, it serves as an international contemporary arts exchange platform where artists collectively explore a space and time at the threshold—a place where unfamiliar artistic languages encounter one another.
In this fleeting experiment, movement, sound and visual traces intertwine, capturing the raw artistic energy that emerges when different worlds meet.
2. About the Performance
On Emptiness, Traces, and the Space Between (間)
It is often only when we encounter the unknown world of another person that we begin to recognise our own position.
As artists who have travelled along different paths step into the same space, the familiar becomes unfamiliar and silence begins to resonate. Along the boundaries between reality and imagination, self and other, acceptance and resistance, sound and movement create continuous waves of tension and response.
〈The Space Between〉 does not present a fixed or conventional narrative. Instead, the stage is shaped by unexpected collisions, fleeting connections, and the artistic traces left behind by their tension.
Within this open space of unfinished dialogue, audiences are not given a completed answer. Instead, they are invited to encounter questions of their own.
3. The Meaning of International Exchange
Beyond Touring and Finished Works: Sharing the Creative Journey
In this project, “exchange” does not mean simply displaying or consuming already completed cultural works.
Instead, artists shaped by different creative environments and cultural contexts bring their own fundamental questions to the stage, confronting one another through the shared question:
“Through what do we exist?”
Rather than smoothing out differences, the project embraces difference itself as a driving force for creation.
In the fleeting moment when dissonance transforms into unexpected harmony, new artistic languages emerge—ones that move beyond national borders and spoken language.
4. Performance Features
Organic Improvisation Within Structure
Structure × Improvisation
A balance between agreement and freedom
The performance is grounded in a carefully designed choreographic architecture while remaining open to transformation through breath, movement and sound in each moment. As a result, no two performances occupy exactly the same space or time.
Raw, personal narratives
Beneath the abstract language of contemporary art lie deeply human emotions shaped by each artist’s own experiences of pain, uncertainty, longing and transformation.
Sensory Polyphony
Movement and sound do not exist merely to accompany one another. Each retains its own independent texture, creating subtle layers of tension and connection. Audiences are invited to actively interpret the multidimensional textures created through sight and sound.
5. Program Information
The program unfolds over approximately 70 minutes, extending the experience of the performance beyond the stage through conversation and reflection.
Main Performance — 50 mins
A multidisciplinary performance bringing together dance, music and media art.
Artist & Audience Talk — 20 mins
An opportunity to hear directly from the participating artists about the creative process, the encounters and tensions that shaped the work, and the artistic inspiration discovered at the boundaries between difference and coexistence.

〈The Space Between | 사이 (間)〉
경계가 허물어지는 지점, 서로 다른 궤적이 교차하는 무대 위에서 새로운 현대예술의 가능성을 탐구합니다.
본 프로젝트는 한국과 호주를 중심으로 칠레, 대만 등 다국적·다장르 아티스트들이 모여 완성된 형태를 나열하는 대신, 각자의 생경한 언어가 마주치는 ’경계의 시공간’을 공동 창작으로 탐해가는 국제 현대예술 교류 플랫폼입니다.
몸짓과 소리, 시각적 잔상이 얽히는 이 찰나의 실험은 서로 다른 세계가 마주쳤을 때 생성되는 가장 순수한 예술적 에너지를 가감 없이 담아냅니다.
2. 공연 소개
여백과 잔상, 그리고 틈(間)에 대하여
우리는 타인이라는 미지의 세계를 마주할 때 비로소 자신의 좌표를 확인합니다.
각기 다른 삶의 궤적을 그리던 예술가들이 한 공간에 발을 딛는 순간, 익숙함은 낯섦으로 변하고 정적은 울림이 됩니다. 현실과 이상, 나와 너, 수용과 거부의 경계선 위에서 소리와 몸짓은 끊임없이 파동을 일으킵니다.
〈사이〉는 정형화된 서사를 전달하지 않습니다. 대신 무대 위를 채우는 것은 예기치 못한 충돌과 찰나의 결합, 그리고 그 긴장감이 남긴 예술적 잔상입니다. 미완의 대화가 이어지는 이 공백의 공간에서 관객은 완성된 답안지 대신 저마다의 깊은 질문과 마주하게 됩니다.
3. 국제교류의 의미
단순한 순회와 완성을 넘어, 창작의 궤적을 공유하다
이 프로젝트에서 말하는 ‘교류’는 이미 완성된 문화적 산물을 상호 전시하거나 소비하는 겉핥기식 교환에 반기를 듭니다.
서로 다른 창작 환경과 문화적 맥락을 지닌 예술가들이 각자의 본질적 질문 "우리는 무엇을 통해 존재하는가"을 무대 위로 가져와 정면으로 맞대는 기획입니다.
차이를 없애 평탄하게 만드는 대신, 차이 그 자체를 창작의 동력으로 삼습니다. 불협화음이 아름다운 화음으로 전환되는 그 찰나의 순간을 통해, 국경과 언어를 초월한 신소재의 예술적 언어가 탄생합니다.
4. 공연 특징
구조라는 뼈대 위에 피어나는 유기적 즉흥성
(Structure × Improvisation)
약속과 자유로운 탈선: 철저히 설계된 안무적 아키텍처(Structure)를 바탕으로 하되, 매 순간 호흡과 소리에 반응하여 변형되는 즉흥성(Improvisation)이 공존합니다. 매 회차 단 하나뿐인 시공간이 연출됩니다.
날것의 서사성: 추상적인 현대예술의 껍질 속에 예술가 개개인이 통과해 온 상처, 방황, 갈망이라는 극히 인간적이고 날것의 감정이 짙게 투영되어 있습니다.
감각적 다성성(Polyphony): 움직임과 사운드가 일대일로 종속되지 않고, 독립된 결을 유지하며 미묘한 장력을 형성합니다. 관객은 시각과 청각이 만들어내는 입체적 텍스처를 능동적으로 재해석하게 됩니다.

총 70분의 여정으로 구성되며, 공연의 감흥이 무대 밖 감각의 확장으로 이어지는 구성을 취합니다.

Collaborating Creatives
Gabzak (Gabriel) | Musician & Sound Artist | Chile / Australia
GabzaK's sound is rooted in Electronica Orgánica, layered with cumbia, dub, ska, jazz, Andean beats and tribal rhythms. Born at the foot of the Chilean Andes, in Santiago, where condors still circle the sky, he carries those mountains, valleys and whispers from the southern Pacific Ocean into ritualistic performances across Australia and overseas. In a world growing more disconnected, GabzaK believes a hug after a show is worth more than a thousand likes in the virtual world. Music as ritual. Roots as resistance. The medicine is real because the roots are real. GabzaK의 음악은 Electronica Orgánica 를 중심으로 쿰비아, 덥, 스카, 재즈, 안데스 리듬과 트라이벌 비트가 층층이 어우러져 있다. 칠레 안데스 산맥의 기슭, 아직도 콘도르가 하늘을 선회하는 산티아고에서 태어난 그는 그곳의 산과 계곡, 그리고 남태평양에서 불어오는 속삭임을 음악에 담아 호주와 해외 무대에서 의식과도 같은 공연을 펼쳐왔다. 점점 더 단절되어 가는 세상 속에서 GabzaK는 공연 후 나누는 한 번의 포옹이 가상세계의 수천 개 ‘좋아요’보다 더 큰 가치가 있다고 믿는다. 음악은 의식이고, 뿌리는 저항이다. 그 뿌리가 진짜이기에, 그가 전하는 치유 또한 진짜다.
Australia | Musician | TaeSoo Kim
A cellist and conductor, he is a musician who brings together the sensitivity of a performer with the broader perspective of a conductor. Rooted in classical music, he has worked across a wide range of performance settings, including orchestral, choral and operatic productions, while also developing an embodied understanding of the rhythms and breath of Korean traditional music through Yeongnam Samulnori. Since founding Voces Caelestium in 2012, he has served as its Artistic Director and Conductor, creating performances in collaboration with a diverse range of musicians. His practice is centred on the process through which different sounds and musical languages meet and form a shared flow. Moving fluidly between performance and conducting, he continues to develop a distinctive musical language of his own. 첼리스트이자 지휘자로, 연주자의 섬세한 표현과 지휘자의 넓은 시선을 함께 지닌 음악가. 클래식 음악을 기반으로 교향악과 합창, 오페라 등 다양한 모양의 무대에서 활동해왔으며, 영남 사물놀이를 통해 한국 전통음악의 장단과 호흡을 몸으로 익혀왔다. 2012년 창단한 Voces Caelestium의 예술감독이자 지휘자로 오랜 시간 다양한 음악가들과 함께 무대를 만들어오고 있다. 서로 다른 소리와 음악적 언어가 만나 하나의 흐름을 이루는 과정에 관심을 두며, 연주와 지휘를 넘나들며 자신만의 음악적 언어를 만들어가고 있다.
Taiwan | Dancer | Yu-Chieh Kao
A Taiwanese dancer started training in Chinese dance, and achieved her BFA in dance at Adelphi University, New York. Yu-Chieh, an artist, has worked with choreographers in past ten years from San Francisco, New York, as well as, Taiwan. She enjoys exploring different ways of movements trough muscles to joints, she connects with audience, people, and artists trough body language. Yu-Chieh moves fluid and express herself in a unique and dynamic movements on stage. 대만 출신의 무용가로, 중국무용을 시작으로 춤을 배웠으며 뉴욕 Adelphi University에서 무용학 학사(BFA)를 취득했다. Yu-Chieh는 지난 10여 년간 샌프란시스코, 뉴욕, 대만을 기반으로 다양한 안무가들과 작업해왔다. 그녀는 근육에서 관절로 이어지는 신체의 움직임을 탐구하며, 몸의 언어를 통해 관객과 사람들, 그리고 다른 예술가들과 교감하는 것을 중요하게 생각한다. Yu-Chieh는 유연하고 유동적인 움직임을 바탕으로, 무대 위에서 자신만의 독창적이고 역동적인 표현을 만들어낸다.

A performing arts production team that brings together light, imagery, space and movement as a unified sensory language. Moving beyond the conventional boundaries of technology, STAGE MARVEL translates the breath, energy and presence of performers into media art, expanding the spectrum of space and time on stage. For 〈The Space Between | 사이 (間)〉, STAGE MARVEL combines light and visual traces with the waves created by dance and music, bringing to life the unfamiliar yet beautiful boundaries that exist between the real and the virtual, movement and space. 빛과 영상, 공간과 움직임을 하나의 감각 언어로 연결하는 공연예술 프로덕션 팀. 기술의 한계를 넘어 무대 위 아티스트의 호흡과 에너지를 미디어아트로 투영하며 시공간의 스펙트럼을 확장한다. 이번 〈The Space Between | 사이 (間)〉에서는 무용과 음악이 이루는 파동에 빛과 잔상을 결합하여, 실재와 가상, 움직임과 무대 사이에 존재하는 낯설고도 아름다운 경계를 구현해 낸다.
Korea | Dancer & Artistic Director - JiEunJin Art Project | Eun Jin Ji
A choreographer and dancer whose practice draws upon Korean sensibilities and movement while extending across international stages. Through JiEunJin Art Project, she has developed a wide range of collaborative experiences with artists in Singapore, Israel, Taiwan and beyond. Travelling from Korea to Sydney for this exchange, she explores through delicate and considered movement how sensations accumulated across different lives and environments can collide, connect and resonate deeply on stage. 한국적 정서와 움직임을 바탕으로 세계 무대에서 활발한 창작을 이어온 안무가이자 무용가. ‘지은진아트프로젝트’를 이끌며 싱가포르, 이스라엘, 대만 등 세계 각지의 예술가들과 다채로운 창작 경험을 쌓아왔다. 이번 교류를 위해 한국에서 시드니로 발걸음을 옮겨, 서로 다른 삶의 공간에서 축적된 감각들이 무대 위에서 어떻게 충돌하고 깊게 맞닿는지 섬세한 몸짓으로 보여준다.

A dancer and choreographer whose practice is grounded in the depth of traditional Korean dance while exploring movement, relationships and connection. Moving beyond fixed forms, she approaches the boundary between different lives and artistic languages as a source of creative energy. Currently based in Sydney, she continues to develop new forms of performance through collaborations and experiments with artists from diverse cultural and artistic backgrounds. 한국 전통무용의 깊이를 바탕으로 움직임과 관계성을 탐구하는 무용가이자 안무가. 정형화된 틀을 벗어나 서로 다른 삶과 예술적 언어가 마주치는 ‘경계’를 창작의 동력으로 삼는다. 현재 호주 시드니를 기반으로 다국적·다장르 예술가들과의 시도를 통해 새로운 무대 언어를 구축해 나가고 있다.

A contemporary dance artist based in Australia who works across both choreography and performance. Drawing on a detailed understanding of physical mechanics, she brings a grounded, concentrated energy to the stage. Moving freely beyond the conventions of dance genres, she explores the body as a medium in itself, revealing its physical power through a multidimensional approach to movement. 호주에서 현대무용을 공부하고 안무와 춤을 병행하는 아티스트. 신체 메커니즘에 대한 치밀한 공부를 바탕으로 무대 위에 묵직하고 밀도 높은 에너지를 채워 넣는다. 무용이라는 틀에 갇히지 않고 다양한 장르를 넘나들며 몸이라는 미디엄이 가진 본연의 힘을 입체적으로 풀어낸다.

A Korean dance artist currently based in Sydney whose storytelling begins with the body itself. With a refined sense of lightness, fluidity and flowing lines, she moves sharply and gracefully through space, creating distinctive traces that exist only in the fleeting moment of performance. 현재 시드니를 기반으로 활동하는 한국무용가. 무대 위에서 오직 몸 하나로 서사를 전하는 아티스트다. 세련되고 가벼운 질감, 그리고 유연하게 흐르는 선으로 공간을 날렵하게 가로지르며 춤을 통해 오직 찰나에만 존재하는 독창적인 선을 그려낸다.
