This month's book is 'Korean Temple Cooking: The Life and Work of Jeongkwan Snim' by Hoo Nam Seelmann:
Korean Temple Cooking is a love letter to the poetry of simple, nourishing food. The book chronicles temple life, Buddhism, and living and cooking seasonally and with a spiritual tie to the land through interviews with and recipes from Jeongkwan Snim, dubbed “the Philosopher Chef” by the New York Times.
Jeongkwan Snim was featured on seen on Netflix's The Philosopher's Kitchen and Chef's Table.
Follow Snim through the seasons at a Korean Buddhist temple and learn to preserve, cook, and savour all that nature has to offer. Recipes are arranged by season, with special extra sections on rice, noodles, tofu, kimchi, seasonings, and more. Essays and interviews give a rare peek into temple life, the history of Buddhism in Korea, its teachings and branches, and even a look at the architecture of the temple and attire worn there.
An expansive and breathtaking chronicle, Korean Temple Cooking is the coffee table book you’ll want to cook out of all year round.
So, how does a cookbook club work??? This ticket secures your spot at the October event. Upon purchasing your ticket I will add you to a WhatsApp group chat with other attendees where you can access a spreadsheet to list what recipe you'd like to make. A copy of the book will be at Better Now in the weeks leading up to the event so you are welcome to come in store and have a look through it, On the day of the event you bring your cooked recipe from 'Korean Temple Cooking' and we all get to share what we've made together! This will be a very small, casual event. There is absolutely no pressure to make a culinary masterpiece, it's just a fun way to get a bit more out of a cookbook and meet a bunch of likeminded people :-)
