October Tips and Tipples
Event description
Join us at The Wooden Boat Centre in Franklin, home of the only school in Australia that teaches traditional wooden boat construction. We will tour through both the discovery centre and the workshop taking in the smell of Tasmania’s unique boat building timbers including Huon Pine, King Billy Pine and Celery Top Pine.
After sustaining damage in recent severe weather, many will be familiar with the centre's latest restoration project. Sea Breeze, affectionately known as The Little Blue Boat, has been a beloved fixture on the River Derwent in Hobart’s northern suburbs for nearly 50 years. Moored alongside the busy Brooker Highway at Montrose Bay, Sea Breeze has captured the hearts of many Tasmanians since its creation by Robin Attrill in the early 1970s. Although the team of volunteers is busy with many other projects, the aim is to prepare Sea Breeze for the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in February 2025.
Following a short tour, we will then move across the road to Frank's Cider House & Café for drinks and nibbles and hear from the team at the Australian Wooden Boat Festival. Returning to Hobart's waterfront from February 7th, this iconic four-day festival showcases the largest and most impressive collection of wooden boats in the southern hemisphere. We will hear an overview of the event and learn ways in which industry can get involved to leverage from this biennial event.
