Have you ever wanted to try Indian classical dance? Come for a welcoming 4-week journey into the graceful and expressive art of Odissi.
Experience the beauty, grace, and rhythm of Odissi, one of India's oldest classical dance traditions.
This 4-week introductory course offers a structured and supportive introduction to the foundations of Odissi dance. Designed for complete beginners, the course will guide students through the essential movements, postures, rhythms, gestures, and expressive elements that form the basis of this rich and captivating art form.
No prior dance experience is required. All ages 12+ are welcome.
Throughout the course, students will learn:
Week 1 – Rhythm & Posture
Introduction to Odissi and the traditional Namaskar (salutation)
The two foundational Odissi postures: Chauka and Tribhaṅgī
Basic footwork and the Odissi walk
Warm-up and cool-down exercises
Week 2 – Movement & Expression
Continued learning of dance steps incorporating hands, torso, and eye movements
Introduction to a simple Odissi spin
Basic hasta mudrās (hand gestures)
Learning of a simple Sanskrit verse with hand gestures (śloka)
Eye and hand exercises
Week 3 – Refinement & Musicality
Refinement of movements in Chauka and Tribhaṅgī
Continued learning of the śloka with coordinated hands and feet
Dancing the verse with music
Neck, eye, and head movement exercises
Week 4 – Bringing It Together
Revision and refinement of all steps and techniques learned
Practice of the completed śloka
Introduction to a short Odissi composition (Ekatālī)
Dancing with music and developing confidence in performance
This course is ideal for anyone curious about Indian classical dance, whether you are completely new to dance or have experience in other movement traditions. Along the way, you'll develop coordination, rhythm, balance, expressive skills, and a deeper appreciation for the artistry of Odissi.

What to bring: Comfortable clothing you can move in and a water bottle. Dance is performed barefoot.
