Off the Record - Real Careers in Medicine
Event description
Medical training is at the forefront of many students’ minds as bottlenecks and lack of exposure continue to cause worry. Our mission at WAMSS is to showcase what the journey from UWA Medical School might look like (with graduates of our school as speakers) and position our students as the best WA has to offer in a shifting career landscape.
In partnership with MDA National, who celebrate their 100th anniversary in WA, this event is a no-nonsense, candid careers night aimed at cutting through the myth-making and anxiety around medical careers. It is designed to give medical students powerful insights into the many diverse ways a medical career can unfold, beyond the traditional formulas and into the real world of decision-making, setbacks, growth, and success.
The panel will speak on…
Their own career journeys (unexpected twists, failures, and breakthroughs)
The myths and realities of specialty training
What they wish they knew in medical school
Practical advice for students unsure of where to start
The panel features 5 MDA National members who all started their careers right here at UWA, and have gone on to pursue director roles, CEO roles and startup roles. There is representation from radiology, pathology, anaesthetics, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery and internal medicine.
There will be a short presentation on the power of mentorship with MDA National clinicians, how to build your experience whilst in school and networking to follow, with clinicians in attendance.
