OI Public Lecture Series- Can Australia save the ocean?
Description
Can Australia save the ocean?
As pressures on the ocean and coasts compound, can Australia demonstrate the leadership needed, domestically and globally, to tackle the challenges head-on?
Drawing on more than two decades at the forefront of ocean and coastal advocacy in Australia and internationally, Paul Gamblin, CEO of the Australian Marine Conservation Society – Australia’s leading ocean conservation organisation – will deliver a candid assessment on this topic, setting out the challenge for all who care about the ocean.
Speaker

Paul Gamblin (CEO, Australian Marine Conservation Society)
Paul has worked in conservation for over 25 years in Australia and internationally to protect places like Ningaloo-Exmouth Gulf, the Kimberley, offshore coral reefs, and as an advocate for marine protected areas off Antarctica and around Australia. Working in Europe, Paul was a lead architect of WWF International’s advocacy campaign to elevate the ocean’s stature, globally, demonstrating that the ocean’s economic output would rank it as the world’s seventh largest economy - referenced by the World Economic Forum, The Economist and the G20, among others - while outlining priority threats and solutions. Paul was appointed CEO of the Australian Marine Conservation Society in early 2025.
