Once the sun sets and the gates close, the old sandstone walls take on a very different feeling. The silence deepens. The shadows lengthen. And sometimes… things happen that cannot easily be explained.

Our experienced investigation team will guide you through a hands-on ghost hunt, where you’ll explore the gaol after dark and attempt to communicate with whatever may still linger within its walls.

With over 40 years of combined paranormal investigation experience, APPI Ghost Hunts & Tours have investigated haunted locations across Australia and around the world. We are passionate about what we do — and we love sharing that experience with our guests.

During the night you will:

• Investigate inside the historic gaol compound after dark
• Use specialised paranormal investigation equipment
• Take part in structured experiments designed to encourage spirit communication
• Learn both the scientific and spiritual approaches to paranormal investigation
• Work alongside experienced investigators who will guide you throughout the evening

But be warned…

Once you step inside Old Gundagai Gaol at night, you may start to understand why so many believe some former inmates never truly left.

Event Information

This event runs for approximately 2 hours.

Please dress appropriately for the weather and bring a bottle of water with you.

There is only one bathroom available at Old Gundagai Gaol, so we recommend using facilities before arriving to minimise waiting times.

Please note: Alcohol or drug intoxication will result in refusal of entry. Mixing spirits with spirits rarely ends well.

These events are run in agreement with Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council.

The History of Old Gundagai Gaol

Following the devastating 1852 Gundagai flood, the town lock-up was rebuilt as a formal watch-house and gaol.

The building was designed by Colonial Architect Alexander Dawson, with construction completed by Charles Hardy in 1859. Additional structures were added in the following years, including a kitchen designed by Government Architect James Barnet in 1863, and the imposing stone boundary wall constructed in 1866.

The gaol complex consists of a number of buildings including:

• The Gaoler’s Residence
• The original hospital building (the earliest gaol structure)
• The main cell block and exercise yard
• External kitchen buildings
• Outbuildings, well and archaeological remains

Prisoners serving short sentences from Gundagai and surrounding districts were held here. The gaol also housed prisoners in transit between other gaols, including bushrangers and offenders awaiting transfer.

By 1870 the gaol was classified as a “proclaimed gaol”, capable of holding between four and twenty prisoners at a time.

Records from that year show the gaol held:

• Debtors
• Prisoners awaiting trial
• Prisoners in transit
• Men sentenced to labour
• Prisoners serving imprisonment sentences

Although the gaol closed in the 1970s, the complex remains one of the few surviving gaol compounds from the 1850s, and a rare example of an almost intact colonial prison site.

Accessibility

Due to the historic construction of the gaol and the natural slope of the land, the site includes stairs and uneven pathways and may be difficult for those with limited mobility.

All payments are non-refundable and non-transferable. When you make a booking it is your responsibility to ensure you are able to attend the event, as APPI Ghost Hunts & Tours cannot move bookings to another date if you are unable to attend.

This policy exists because venue hire and operational costs are paid in advance, regardless of attendance.
