Originally built in 1864 as Wollongong's Telegraph Office, the building played an important role in connecting the Illawarra with the outside world. Postal services were added in 1869, before a significant architectural transformation in 1882 under James Barnet, Colonial Architect of New South Wales. His distinctive Victorian design helped create the historic façade that remains a feature of the building today.
