Olive Pick n Press

Hallo Farmers! Be a part of our annual Olive Pick n Press to pick and make your own olive oil. It’s really easy and is great fun for you and your whole family. Before you register here, you MUST be a North Freo Social Farm member. You can register as a social member via this link, new members welcome!

Step 1: Secure your spot by registering here and pay your non refundable $20 deposit. This is deducted from your final pressing costs.  

Step 2: Find an olive tree in your or a friends’ garden or park. There are lots of street trees just ask the owner of the closest house if can pick them. Generally folk are delighted because the olives can make a mess in the street if they are not picked. 

Step 3: Get your gear and start picking- all you need is an olive rake and a tarp to lay under the tree and a well ventilated sturdy cardboard box/crate for your olives. No plastic boxes - the olives get mouldy. The olives need to be fresh and firm so only pick from Thursday 2 May to Sunday 5 May. 

Step 4: Deliver your olives to our collection point on Sunday 5 May. 

Volunteers from the NFSF will take your olives to be pressed in York on Monday 6 May. 

Step 5: Collect your delicious fresh extra virgin olive oil from the farm and pay the pressing costs. 

There is a small cost for the pressing per litre of oil. It takes approximately 10 kilos of olives to make 1 litre of oil. If you have never done this before don’t stress. We can guide you through the process. It is easiest to pick using a small olive rake. These are not expensive and can be found online, for example here. 

Once you've registered, you'll receive an email via Humanitix with lots more detail. There are lots of logistics and specifics so please look out for this email and read it thoroughly so we can have a smooth Pick n Press process.
