OM Melbourne | A Collective Chant at Federation Square

One city. Many voices. One collective sound.

What if hundreds of people came together in the heart of Melbourne, not to protest, not to make a statement, and not because we all share the same beliefs, but simply to put something beautiful back into our city?

At a time when our communities can feel increasingly divided, frustrated or overwhelmed by the noise of the world, we have an opportunity to create a moment of collective connection.

Inspired by a gathering in Italy, where hundreds of people came together in their city square to chant OM, we're inviting the Melbourne community to come together and create our own shared experience.

Imagine hundreds of voices joining together, blending into one collective sound. There is something incredibly powerful about chanting together. It can bring us into a state of centredness and balance, quieten the mind and create a beautiful sense of connection.

What is AUM (OM)?

AUM (commonly written as OM) is an ancient sacred sound, traditionally understood as the primordial vibration of existence and a symbol of the interconnectedness of all things.

The traditional Sanskrit form represents three distinct sounds:

• A (Ah) – the beginning

• U (Ooh) – the continuation

• M (Mmm) – the completion

• The silence – representing the stillness and consciousness beyond the sound.

Chanting AUM can be meditative, grounding, energising, uplifting or deeply spiritual. The experience will be different for everyone.

There is no particular intention you need to hold, no outcome you need to seek and no philosophy you need to subscribe to. Simply come as you are, share something beautiful and allow yourself to experience it.

We are not coming together to ask for something. We are coming together to create something.

Everyone is welcome. You don't need any previous experience with chanting, meditation or spiritual practices. Join in at your own comfort level, or simply be present and listen.

What to bring

Please bring a hat, sunscreen, drinking water, snacks if needed, and something comfortable to sit on if you prefer.

Registration is encouraged so we can get an idea of expected numbers and keep registered attendees informed of any important event updates.

A note about the gathering

This is an independent, grassroots, community-led gathering. It is not an official Federation Square event, nor is it organised, endorsed or managed by Federation Square or any other organisation.
