Omniversal Hum: Anthony Pateras Double Solo
Event description
Omniversal Hum presents — Anthony Pateras: double solo
Internationally acclaimed composer, pianist & electronic artist Anthony Pateras presents two new extended solo works at the Eleventh Hour Theatre, September 20th, 2024. These pieces will showcase Pateras’ ongoing interests in aural hallucination & electro-acoustic orchestration, augmented by his highly personal pianistic virtuosity and his recent explorations into the Kyma sound design language. Presented in 6-channel surround, this is the world premiere performance of the composer’s latest solo repertoire, written and performed to mark 25 years of international activity before embarking on a celebratory 21-date tour of Europe.
Stretching from his early releases on John Zorn’s Tzadik label, through his four solo/collaborative albums on seminal Austrian label Editions Mego, via his own Immediata music/text project to his more recent records on seminal imprints Another Timbre & Shelter Press, Pateras’ music over the last two decades is slippery & ever-changing. Spanning grindcore bands, glitched out hip hop, delicate ensemble works, full-on orchestral pieces, mise-en-abyme musique concrete, maximalist noise, acousmatic diffusions and more recently, drone-y Italian prog, Anthony’s musical identity is aurally located solely at a nexus of the desire to explore, the will to interrogate, the highest level of craft, and minimal bullshit.
This concert is a one-off, 90-minute, solo appearance in his hometown of Naarm, after living nomadically for 7 years before settling on Djaara Country. This will be a sonic event not be missed!
Anthony Pateras is a composer, pianist & electroacoustic musician active since the late 90s. His practice spans concert works, piano performance, acousmatic diffusion, film soundtrack, psychoacoustic experiments, percussion ensemble, as well as playing in the bands Sulla Lingua & PIVIXKI.
Diverse in scope, he has made records with avant-metal icons (Mike Patton, Stephen O’Malley), worked with major orchestras (Los Angeles Philharmonic, BBC Symphony), performed with free jazz legends (Paul Lovens, Han Bennink), soundtracked distinguished writers (Sylvère Lotringer, Christos Tsiolkas), sculpted musique concrète (Jérôme Noetinger, Valerio Tricoli), sonofied visual artworks (Slave Pianos, Yves Netzhammer) & composed for string virtuosi (Richard Tognetti, Erkki Veltheim).
Having cultivated singular languages in the Pateras/Baxter/Brown & North of North trios, he remains committed to piano improvisation as a method of assimilating instrumental practice with his compositional thought. His electronic work traverses multiple rhythmic disciplines to synthesize polyrithmia with timbral otherness.
His work is broadly published, including albums on John Zorn’s Tzadik & Peter Rehberg’s Editions Mego. Among countless international engagements, he’s been commissioned by INA-GRM twice, increasingly integrating acousmatic techniques into his global compositional strategy. This can be heard on his 2023 solo albums Two Solos (Futura Resistenza) & A Dread Of Voids (Another Timbre).
His forthcoming releases are Sulla Lingua: ON (Improved Sequence, Italy, 2024) & the soundtrack to Journey of Shadows (Hallow Ground, Switzerland, 2025).
