Omniversal Hum: Maria Moles, Chloë Sobek, James Rushford

Omniversal Hum presents avant-sounds in the concrete confines of No Vacancy gallery. Three solo performances from Maria Moles, Chloë Sobek and James Rushford.

Maria is an Australian drummer, composer and producer based in Narrm/Melbourne. Her solo percussion performances draw on ideas from the Kulintang music of the Philippines and contemporary electronic production to weave hypnotic webs from layers of unmetered pulse that slowly undergo subtle textural transformations. In collaborative contexts ranging from free improvisation, jazz and contemporary composition to experimental pop, Maria contributes an acute sense of touch, placement and timbre, unashamed virtuosity and a powerful rhythmic drive.

Chloë Sobek is a composer-performer and electroacoustic experimental sound artist. Her practice is currently centred on the development of post-anthropocentric sonic performance that encompasses a diversity of enquiry from acoustemology through to noise music. She is invested in creative practice as a means to deconstruct and reshape the way we conceptualise our collective futures.

James Rushford is an Australian composer-performer, whose work draws from concrète, improvised, avant-garde and collagist musical languages, staking out an idiosyncratic stylistic space that has been described as ‘electro-acoustic experimentation with a beating heart’ (Boomkat) and ‘haunted Jacobean ASMR’ (The Wire). Investigating the creases, cracks, and folds in traditions ranging from early music to new age, Rushford’s work subtly exaggerates seemingly liminal aspects such as atmosphere and the bodily presence of the performer until these take on a weight equal to musical elements such as pitch, rhythm and timbre.
