Activists Sandra Goldbloom Zurbo and Ken Mansell will introduce On the Side of the Angels, a 56-minute documentary film about the history of the Australian peace movement, from World War 1 to the Vietnam war. The film draws upon historical documents, graphic footage and stills of protest rallies. There are also interviews with peace movement luminaries Ralph Gibson, Sam Goldbloom, Stephen Murray-Smith, Jim Cairns, Jean McLean and Joseph Camilleri. On the Side of the Angels is directed by Claire Jager and produced by Peter Kaufmann.

Following the film, Ken and Sandra will recount highlights of their own involvement, from the 1950s to the present day.

Sandra will share her experiences as an organiser of the Vietnam Moratorium an event that saw over 100,000 people take to the streets of Melbourne. Ken will talk about being arrested four times for acts of civil disobedience against Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam war. In the 1980s, as an organiser for People for Nuclear Disarmament and the Anti-Bases Coalition, Ken devoted himself to raising awareness of the role of American military bases on Australian soil. He was national organiser of the October 1987 protest rallies at Pine Gap.

The event will conclude with Ken and Sandra inviting reminiscences from the audience and some Q&A.
