One Man, Two Guvnors
Description
One Man, Two Guvnors is a fast-paced farce set in 1960s Brighton. The story follows Francis Henshall, an out-of-work skiffle musician who becomes employed by a small-time East End gangster, Roscoe Crabbe. Roscoe is in Brighton to collect money from his fiancée’s father—but “he” is actually Rachel Crabbe in disguise, impersonating her dead twin brother, who has been killed by her boyfriend, Stanley Stubbers.
Unbeknownst to each other, both Rachel and Stanley are in Brighton, and the perpetually hungry Francis seizes the opportunity to secretly work for Stanley as well, hoping to double his wages and secure more meals. Juggling two masters proves increasingly chaotic as letters are mixed up, disguises unravel, and romantic misunderstandings spiral out of control.
Packed with slapstick, audience interaction, and sharp wordplay, the play is a modern adaptation of Carlo Goldoni’s 18th-century comedy The Servant of Two Masters, celebrating the traditions of commedia dell’arte while delivering contemporary humour and high-energy theatricality.
