This event will not be recorded for later viewing. Single registration cost is for each individual, not per site. Each person must register and attendance is required for both sessions. Zoom will be used to deliver the training with “meeting room” details emailed to participants prior to each module. You will need to download Zoom software to your computer. A webcam and inbuilt microphone on your computer is also preferable so you can fully participate.

Intended Participants

This series of two 3.5hr-hour tele-training modules is intended for Speech-Language Therapists working with children whose home language is not English and/or those who have a special interest in providing equitable assessment and treatment for children who speak two or more languages, and experience speech and language difficulties affecting both/all of their languages.

Pre-readings will be emailed to participants 1-2 weeks prior to the workshop.

Learning Objectives

Following this event participants will be able to:

• Differentiate typical bilingual language acquisition from language learning difficulties

• Select the appropriate language or language(s) to assess and deliver support to bilingual children

• Work effectively with interpreters to ensure SLT services are delivered in an equitable and effective manner

• Engage and involve bilingual parents and those who have limited English language skills to support their child’s communication

Content and Format

Working with children who speak more than one language can be a complex and challenging area of practice. This session will provide participants with knowledge and understanding of bilingualism and best practice in meeting the needs of those whose home language is not English. The workshop will be comprised of lecture style content, interactive discussion and case study discussion

About Dr Sean Pert

Dr Pert is a speech and language therapist with more than 25 years experience in both the NHS and Charity sector. He has published research papers, clinical guidelines, book chapters and assessments on bilingualism, as well as delivering specialist services to bilingual children and their families. He teaches on Clinical Education, Clinical Phonetics and Bilingualism at the University of Manchester teaches and has won the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists’ Sternberg Award for Clinical Innovation on an unprecedented three occasions, as well as The University of Manchester’s Making a Difference Award for Social Responsibility for Outstanding Contribution to Equality and Diversity.
