Reading and Writing for Change by Amelia Walker explores the many ways in which creative writers take part in fighting injustices and pushing for positive change. To celebrate its release, this event features readings from writers around the world whose works epitomise the spirit of reading and writing for change.

The event will begin with a recorded reading by Paul Collis, 2016 winner of the prestigious David Unaipon award, and author of the Foreword to Reading and Writing for Change. We will then hear from leading contemporary writers including Lisa Collyer, Jaydeep Sarangi, David Prater, Autumn Royal, Animikh Patra, Amita Nijhawan, Elina Mikkilä, Emily Sun, Prabal Kumar Basu, Chris Mooney-Singh, Caty Flynn, Ranu Uniyal, and Bashabi Fraser. Limited open mic slots are also available (please email amelia.walker@adelaide.edu if you are interested in pre-booking a slot).

This style of launch is intended to emphasise one of the key points the book makes – that creative writing is at its best about communities, conversations, and working together towards a kinder world. Readers and attendees are encouraged to cross-promote their own works and network new connections to continue pressing and essential conversations about how readers and writers can work together to affect positive changes in our world.

Reviews of Reading and Writing for Change:

"In this timely and thought-provoking book, Amelia Walker problematises and disrupts western cultural assumptions about creative practice, persuasively arguing that it is only by embracing a more diverse and open understanding of what "creative writing" might mean that socially and politically engaged writers may begin to affect change."

- Oz Hardwick, Professor of Creative Writing, Leeds Trinity University, UK

"Rigorously methodical and indispensably pertinent: Amelia Walker's Reading and Writing for Change is for any socially conscious writer seeking yet for their creative production to do something beyond the merely decorative or decorous. Walker's exemplary book prods us back towards the (lifelong) conversations any serious writer will be having (with themselves), & offers new conceptual tools to help us more sensibly answer the questions, 'what am I doing?' and 'why am I doing it?'

- Dan Disney, author of accelerations & inertias

"Amelia Walker's Reading and Writing for Change is a mercurial exploration of 'ethically viable writing.' The book draws on the relationship between walking and writing as exploratory methodology in order to approach radical ideas and advance boundary-breaking theories, looping back to a critique of canon formation. Walker's writing lifts the work towards a unifying ethical vision, a dream, but a dream simultaneously wrenched and weighted by its political embodiment. An authentic, urgent, and essential voice for our times."

- Dominique Hecq, International Poetry Studies Institute, Australia
