Session 2 Monday 20th September 2021, 11.00am-2.30pm NZST (NOTE: this session is 30 minutes longer for case study discussion)

This event will not be recorded for later viewing. Single registration cost is for each individual, not per site. Each person must register and attendance is required for both sessions. Zoom will be used to deliver the training with “meeting room” details emailed to participants prior to each module. You will need to download Zoom software to your computer. A webcam and inbuilt microphone on your computer is also preferable so you can fully participate.

Intended Participants

This series of two 3-hour tele-training modules is intended for Speech-Language Therapists working in a paediatric setting with children aged from 0-7 years of age, with diagnosed ASD or related disabilities, and/or young children not yet diagnosed that are demonstrating signs and symptoms of ASD. Speech language therapy students who have a clinical interest in ASD and/or who have had a clinical placement experience in ASD are welcome to attend.

Learning Objectives

Following this event participants will be able to:

• Discuss the current evidence base of ASD intervention and how the clinician can protect their clients from pseudoscientific interventions.
• Implement key strategies to building therapeutic rapport with young clients with ASD.
• Identify at least three methods for developing a function hypothesis for a behaviour of concern and describe how to implement them.
• Discuss at least three positive reinforcement strategies and how to implement them in your sessions.
• Identify the key components of a behaviour support plan.
• Develop working strategies to form the basis of a behaviour support plan to address behaviour of concern in your therapy sessions, including preventative strategies, replacement strategies and reactive strategies.

Content and Format

Working with individuals with ASD can be a complex and challenging area of practice. This session will provide participants with knowledge and understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorders in early childhood to age 7 years. This workshop will examine current evidence-based practice of ASD intervention in preschool and school-aged children. Participants will have the opportunity to learn and practice specific techniques and apply them to their current clinical setting. The workshop will be comprised of lecture style content, interactive discussion and case study discussion.

About Mrs Kristin Bayley

Kristin Bayley is a speech pathologist and Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA) with over 20 years' experience working with children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders and related disabilities in the US, UK and Australia. She has worked with Autistic people across the home, school, residential and vocational settings. She is currently the Clinical Director at To the Moon & Back, in Sydney, NSW and is the Program Director of the Master and Graduate Certificate programs in Applied Behaviour Analysis at Griffith University. Kristin's clinical and research interests are in the functional assessment of behaviour, early behavioural intervention, and well as the application of the principles of applied behaviour analysis to teaching early communication skills, including use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).
