Bio Carla Gottgens

Carla is a professional practising artist who works across both 2D and 3D art commissions. She is currently working on 6 separate commissions across 4 states of Australia including 2 large-scale sculpture commissions for metro Sydney and regional QLD, 1 medium scale sculpture commission utilising repurposed building materials for metro Sydney, a series of workshops to design an artwork with a strong community collaboration element in regional NSW, a digitally created 2-dimensional work for Western Australia and a behind the scenes advisory and digital support project for a First Nations Elder in Victoria.

Carla recently completed the large-scale sculptural work in Shellharbour, NSW that sits beside the sea in Bardsley Park. This is her third commission for Shellharbour, with the others being a laser-cut privacy screen for public toilets in Albion Park titled “Best in Show” and a wall mural in the Stockland Shellharbour shopping centre titled “Factions".

Her work is diverse with the themes for each commission being thoroughly researched and applied for each site specific artwork. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts from COFA, UNSW, Carla has a background in photography which forms the starting point for all of her art outcomes even though that artistic medium may appear far removed from the final art piece.

With a public art, exhibition and commissioning history, spanning almost 15 years, Carla focuses on artworks that have a strong community collaboration element as part of the design and/or creation part of the commission.

This professional development series is a joint project between; South Coast Arts, Shellharbour and Kiama Councils
