The School of Architecture and Built Environment at the University of Newcastle is delighted to be hosting Mike Hewson through our Open Architecture Talk series. These talks are free and open for students, practitioners, and the broader community to come together and ‘open up’ our shared places, practices and projects. This public programming is part of our Visiting Architects and Experts project, that draws in a diversity of voices and perspectives to discuss, workshop and critique the built environment.

Talk Title| When Premium Doesn't Impress

The pursuit of “Premium” is often a waste of energy, money, and opportunity. Artist and engineer Mike Hewson shares practical lessons on questioning the fruitfulness of pursuing ‘best practice’. His work embraces discarded worldly materials, embodied with life and potential and using them in a simple, direct manner to use resources responsibly and nudge us toward living in a more free and perhaps interesting manner.

Mike Hewson is a visual artist with a background in structural engineering and heavy-civil construction. His award-winning projects pioneer new ways to merge conceptual art projects into the public realm.

Hewson works to prove we can, in fact, do things that are considered untenable in a public setting. Each project aims to catalyse fresh conversation about how the bureaucratic and managerial aspects of power are shaping our public lives, asking if we like that shape or if we’d like to explore other freer options.

Join Mike live in the newly reopened tower cinema space - kick back and relax with a wine and some popcorn.

Venue| Tower Cinemas, Cinema 3. 183-185 King St, Newcastle NSW 2300
