Open Christchurch 2022: Te Papa Ōtākaro
Event description
OPEN CHRISTCHURCH 2021 Guided Walk: Te Papa Ōtākaro
With: Joseph Hullen (NgāiTūāhuriri/Ngāti Hinematua)
This walk follows the path of Ōtākaro Avon River and 13 ngā whāriki manaaki (woven mats of welcome) placed beside it. Joseph will explore the cultural significance of these mosaics, the river’s role as the flowing life force of Ōtautahi and how the whāriki are complemented by hapū-led ecological interventions, including the selection of appropriate native tree and plant species. Joseph will also recount stories of the Ōtākaro itself and share the Ngāi Tahu aspects of the literary trail
