Event description
OPEN CHRISTCHURCH 2022: Ōruapaeroa/Travis Wetland Bird Hide Architecture Tour
With: Crispin Schurr
Find out more about the Ōruapaeroa/Travis Wetlands Bird Hide from the architect who designed it. Perched above the
wetlands with a roof form that suggests flight, this bird hide of timber, posts, strips of aluminium and plywood
evokes both New Zealand’s vernacular tradition of shelters and its feathery objects of observation. Sliding
hatches allow for 270-degree views, while inclined benches double as seats and desks. The slight separation of
each of the bird hide’s elements frames the surrounding landscape, incorporating it into the structure. The result
is fun, clever and respectful of its environment.
