Open Christchurch 2023: College House (University of Canterbury Hall of Residence)
Event description
OPEN CHRISTCHURCH 2023: College House
Architects:Â Warren and Mahoney, 1964-67; Wilkie & Bruce, 2015
Sir Miles Warren deemed College House their best building. Through the application of modernist materials (concrete block, exposed concrete beams and lintels) and his ability to create order out of a complex system, W&M designed not just a dormitory, but a community, complete with chapel, library and dining hall, grouped together to encourage connection. The Oxbridge tradition of quads and halls melds with modernism in an effortless display from the masters, with a nod to Gothic Revival in the reverse pitched copper roofs.
